Nissan Motor has begun manufacturing its new electric model Leaf

Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor Co. announced Friday that Japan began production of the new electric model called Leaf, which will have a range of 160 km with lithium-ion battery, as it prepares to bring to sale on domestic market and the U.S., in December, according to AFP.

Nissan, the company where the French automaker Renault holds 45%, estimated that by 2020 electric cars will account for 10% of global sales.

Leaf type hatchback model has five seats, a top speed of 140 km / h, battery charging times are eight hours in a standard outlet and 30 minutes at a fast loading station, tells AFP.

Leaf model will be sold in December in Japan and the U.S. and in Europe in early 2011. Carlos Ghosn said the first year’s production already sold. Only in the U.S. Nissan has received 20,000 orders for Leaf.
